    CATHARSIS _ SKINSHIP

Art in all its forms gives us a sense of catharsis.

I think the reason why so many escape movies, like Cast Away, Prison Break, The Shawshank Redemption, and so on, have been so popular is because they have bought ‘empathy’.

What empathy did we have in the all-too-obvious storyline where the protagonist succeeds in escaping?

It's not like we're actually stuck on a desert island or in prison.

Maybe it's more like an unconscious, indirect empathy that the protagonist's [situation] was different from mine, but the [emotions] he felt were similar to mine.

It wasn't about a visible image, but more about the emotional connection and the feeling of liberation when it was all resolved.

In fact, the connection of the situation didn't really matter.

I hope you'll feel emotional release from the tracks you'll hear.

So, let's start explaining the tracks.

1 / The After Party - SKINSHIP VIP

    “The After Party” | 0 - 01:35

I imagined a time bomb going off.

In movies and TV shows, dynamite doesn't always go off right when it reaches zero seconds.

We see the timer tensely ticking away, and then when it hits zero seconds, there's a moment of silence, and then the explosion.

The progression of these sequences is actually a device to make the explosion more dramatic.

When the timer runs out, we have a subconscious expectation.

We know the bomb is going to go off, and we're focused on seeing it go off.

The song's composition and drop match those scenes, and I wanted the explosion to be as overwhelming as I expected it to be.

The track started with the idea of, “I want to write a track that that would kick off the party with a bang”,

and then I focused on [representing the scene] of the time bomb going off.

2 / Comet Express - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Comet Express” | 01:35 - 04:40

Have you ever been to Lotte World and ridden the Comet Express roller coaster?

From the time I was waiting in line to ride, I could hear various sounds representing the universe.

The roller coaster, Comet Express, had many space creatures and fun sounds prepared for each course.

It felt like a real exploration.

Unlike other rides, I didn't want to give a strong stimulus, but wanted to give a feeling of exploration like the Comet Express.

The song is about a journey through the unknown universe with the sounds of imaginary alien creatures.

3 / Sixth Sense - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Sixth Sense” | 04:40 - 07:20

The sixth sense is described in a bunch of ways, like “gut feeling, excitement, inspiration, intuition, premonition, etc.”

I wanted to give a “pop pop” feeling that match the nature of the sixth sense, rather than feeling it slowly,

Drop 1 - Flow of unconsciousness

Drop 2 - Beginning of consciousness

Drop 3 - Intuitive jolts in the middle of consciousness

The song is more subtle until the outro.

I feel like the development of the sixth sense is somewhat acquired, as opposed to the other five senses, which are innate.

I've found that to be true for a lot of my life.

It's like all kind of mom’s intuitions about their kids are always right.

Just by looking at their kids when they're asleep, they can guess everything about how their day has been.

4 / New Rich - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “New Rich, upstart” | 07:20 - 09:36

I wanted to write a song about someone who suddenly becomes rich and spends a lot of money chasing pleasure.

I wanted to write a song that was both unpleasant and pleasant.

It's about having dirty pleasures that are stimulating.

Here's the scenario of the song.

Verse 1 Build Up - What would you do if you became a millionaire?

Verse 1 Drop - A life of pleasure

Verse 2 Build Up - Thirst and temptation

Verse 2 Drop - A life of pleasure that can't be stopped even in the midst of emptiness

In the end, the main character (New Rich) is caught in a never-ending dilemma.

In a society full of oppression, we do things every day that bind us, or take away our freedom.

Everyone puts aside their current freedom in order to succeed, to get rich, to live well.

A life of abundance, of security, of having their needs met.

    Is there really freedom there?

Or are we limiting our freedom by thinking that a more abundant life is the key to true freedom?

5 / Pick Up - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Pick Up” | 09:36 - 11:44

A fiery weekend! Young people all dressed up to enjoy the night!

A huge crowd and loud music! How could love not be sizzling in the middle of it all?

I wanted to include some fun expressions in “Pick Up, Hunting” from the perspective of a passionate man.

“I'm gonna find my true love today!” (him shouting with his eyes blazing.)

I wanted it to be silly, fun, and show off his alpha male side.

    Verse 1 Drop - Searching

    Verse 2 Drop - Bold dash !

The story of the different vocals, the flow of the song, and the bold forward movement of the passionate man after the search are the listening points of the track.

Concept : Proverb - None but the brave deserve the fair.

p.s. If you listen to all my tracks, not just this this track, you will enjoy the storytelling and flow of the track more.

    Pickup*

The act of flirting with someone (Encyclopedia)

I was inspired by seeing a man and a woman exchanging numbers.

I'm sure you two are lovers now :)

6 / Radio Funk - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Radio Funk” | 11:44 - 14:54

What if the radio had a mind of its own and could talk?

Instead of just playing a bunch of songs based on an algorithm,

the radio would be your personal DJ!

The concept of playing a variety of music from verse 1 to 3 is interspersed with some funny lyrics, so there's a lot of fun to be had.

There's a part in the middle of the song that a lot of people really like:

“If you thought this rhythm song was gonna go, Beeyo, Beeyo, Beeyo, you were right!” (13:28)

That's the part where I quote the rhyme of the lyrics as the melody for the drop.

What would it be like to have a DJ on my cell phone in my pocket? I think we would be best friends :)

It's inspired by “Night at the Museum” and Bumblebee from “Transformers 1” - those are movies where imagination becomes reality.

7 / Chic Boy - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Chic Boy” | 14:54 - 17:54

The theme of this song is exactly what the title says.

Chic can also be described as sophisticated. I wanted to avoid anything too heavy or thick, but still give it a bit of a fresh feeling.

A sense of distance, but also of being drawn in.

An unflappable stance that doesn't come easily.

That's the mark of a chic guy.

Understated synths (melodies) and beats are the listening points.

8 / Masters At Work - Work (SKINSHIP REMIX) (w/ Stop - Gypsy Unit)

    “I'm your employer” | 17:54 - 21:00

I started working on Masters At Work because I loved Denise Belfont's vocals on this song.

Despite the title of the original song, the lyrics are quite explicit, expressing sexual desire for the janitor.

I didn't realise what the lyrics were about when I first heard it, but as soon as I did, not only hook, the verse and chorus stuck in my head for days.

I used a Hoover synth (electronic) that maximized the high-pitched sound, as I wanted the vocals to sound weighty and powerful, but also breezy, like the vocals in the track.

The dopamine part of the song is the introduction to verses 1 and 2.

Inserted song before the remix: Gypsy Unit - Stop

I thought I needed something playful and rough to lighten the mood of what could have been a heavy track.

Gypsy Unit's Stop is so sophisticated for being a decade old, it reminds me of a basketball game [freestyle].

9 / Maine Coon - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    "Black Maine Coon" | 21:00 - 23:24

I wrote this song because I was totally captivated by a Maine Coon—a cat as big as a person.

At first, I thought it was a jaguar.

I took the theme of heaviness, which can be overwhelming, and run with it throughout the song, but since it's a cat, I tried to express that elegance with a moving bassline.

It's fun to imagine a giant cat with a human body.

    10 / Bipolar - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Bipolar” | 23:24 - 25:39

I wanted to use a lot of short sound effects to represent the sparking emotions.

The song is broken down into four sections that deal with different emotions.

Emotional [high] - [Mood] - Mood [swing] - [Mood]

Verse 1 Build Up - Emotional [high]

Verse 1 Drop - [Some kind of mood] that you're not quite sure what it is

Verse 2 Build Up -[Rise and fall] of emotion

Verse 2 Drop - [Bright mood] that you're not quite sure what it is

Bipolar is a mental disorder where emotional highs, also known as mania or hypomania, and lows, also known as depression coexist.

At first, it seems like it's just a simple cycle of highs and lows, but I think there's more to it.

When you're feeling good, there's an unconscious worry that

“What if I get depressed again?”, but when you're low,

“I'll be bright again” is excluded, and the depression takes over.

Even when you're feeling good, it's not 100% there.

When people think of bipolar, they think of

    “depression,” “sadness,” “loss,” “anger,”

    and other minor emotions,

    not “happiness,” “joy,” “brightness,” “love,”

    and other major emotions.

I wanted to show the inside of bipolar, not the surface.

p.s. The song was created from an imaginary scenario.

I've never experienced it myself, so I can't fully relate to it.

But maybe we already knew that.

That their laughter was actually a brightness in their depression.

11 / Never Stop the Rave - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Endless frenzy” | 25:39 - 28:05

If you love EDM, you've probably heard of Rave.

It's a party where you dance all night to intense electronic music and an energetic atmosphere.

Raving is all about expressing yourself freely in it.

I was looking for a stage of immersion, so I used certain electronic sounds to help me focus, and I tried to express the dynamics with

fast beats and repetitive, rapidly changing synths (melodies).

    Mainly techno, house, and trance,

but it’s an uptempo electro house that was inspired by the idea that you can rave in other genres with offbeats.

p.s. Basically, rave music is music for dancing.

You'll have a lot more fun listening to it with your arms up and dancing.

12 / Party Lover - SKINSHIP (Original Mix)

    “Party Lover” | 28:05 - end

I remember that day, the last hour of the last day of the World DJ Festival.

The day the world was filled with music. The look on your faces on stage was that of youth.

I remember the clap that I and you all gave after the last song of the show, with the shouts of "encore!"

It was like we were both saying, "I've got your heart, and you've got mine."

But really, it was like an ovation for the youth and the youthful spirit we were all sharing.

This song captures the energy of that day, when it seemed like it would never end because we were all together.

Theme: Racing car picking up speed

Whatever the situation, it's all a bit of a gamble.

You can plan and prepare as much as you can, but you'll still be at the mercy of fate along the way.

    Everything will be uncertain.

You're always thinking, “Will it work out?”

That fear of the unknown can become an obsession.

You just have to believe in yourself.

I can't say, “It's going to work out,” but I want to say, “It's okay. You will be fine.”

The wind doesn't always blow in the direction the sun shines.
